BOAT MAINTENANCE IS ESSENTIAL IN THE SPRING

Learn how to maintain your boat and create a maintenance checklist

There's no better place to than out on the open water! Whether you're going fishing or just floating with friends and a full cooler, you always have weekends set when you own a boat. However, before you take your boat out for a fun-filled day on the water this Spring, it is essential to ensure all systems are well-maintained and in good condition. Boat maintenance is crucial for safety reasons and for keeping the vessel running smoothly throughout the summer months.

Let's dive into the importance of boat maintenance and provide you with a boat maintenance checklist to keep your boat in top condition.

Why is boat maintenance important during the spring?

1.    Safety
The safety of everyone onboard should always be a top priority when boating. Regular boat maintenance ensures that all safety equipment, such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, and distress signals, are in good working condition.

2.    Performance
Regular maintenance helps keep your boat running efficiently and smoothly while ensuring it performs optimally. Maintenance items like checking and changing the oil, replacing worn-out parts, and ensuring the fuel system are clean and functional. Proper maintenance can also help to improve the boat's fuel economy and reduce emissions.

3.    Cost savings
Proper maintenance can help extend your boat's life and its components, saving you money in the long run. In addition, preventative maintenance, such as oil & filter changes, is much cheaper than repairing or replacing major components due to neglect.

Boat Maintenance Checklist

1.    Clean the boat
Regular cleaning helps to maintain the boat's appearance and prevents dirt and grime from accumulating. Always utilize fresh water and non-abrasive cleaning products. Keep pressure washers at a low enough setting to not damage the exterior or compromise any leak-proof areas. Utilize a soft brush on fiberglass, timber, canvas, and other surfaces rather than a coarse brush that can add to the natural wear your boat will take on.

2.    Check the hull
The hull is the most critical component of the boat, and any damage to it can cause serious problems. Check the hull for any signs of damage or cracks and repair them immediately. Also, check the hull for any signs of wear and tear, such as chipping or fading.

3.    Check the electrical system
The boat's electrical system is responsible for powering everything from lights to the engine. Check the battery for any signs of corrosion and replace it if necessary. Also, check all electrical connections, switches, and fuses for any signs of wear or damage.

4.    Check the fuel system
The fuel system is responsible for delivering fuel to the engine, and any problems with it can cause serious performance issues. Check the fuel tank for any signs of corrosion or leaks and replace it if necessary. Also, check the fuel lines and filters for any signs of damage and replace them if necessary.

5.    Check the engine
The engine is the heart of the boat, and regular maintenance is crucial to keep it running smoothly. Check the oil level and change it if necessary, replace the oil filter, and check the spark plugs. Also, check the belts, hoses, and other components for any signs of wear or damage.

6.    Check the steering and controls
The steering and controls are responsible for directing the boat and controlling its speed. Check the steering for any signs of stiffness or resistance and lubricate it if necessary. Also, check the throttle and shift controls for any signs of wear or damage.

7.    Check the propeller
The propeller is responsible for propelling the boat through the water, and any damage to it can cause serious performance issues. Check the propeller for any signs of wear or damage and replace it if necessary.

8.    Check the safety equipment
Even if you're only going out on a simple afternoon cruise, it is essential to have basic  emergency safety equipment and first-aid supplies on hand. Your first aid kit should be able to treat minor injuries or burns, but having motion sickness medication on hand is always welcome for those who may occasionally get seasick. Your emergency kit should include supplies for basic emergency maintenance, signal flares, and an emergency radio.

Regular boat maintenance is a lot of work, but for boat enthusiasts, it's a labor of love…with an occasional curse word here and there.
