Overview

Island Current – 1984 42' USCG-Inspected Charter Fishing Vessel

Island Current is a working charter boat with a long, proven record, and she's ready to keep earning from day one. Built in Gloucester, Virginia in 1984, she has spent decades carrying anglers and sightseers out of City Island, New York. Her new owner gets more than a boat: she's a turnkey platform for a charter or party-fishing business.

She's USCG-inspected for 19 people on lakes, bays and sounds: 17 passengers plus a crew of two, a master and a deckhand. That certification is the hardest part of starting a charter operation, and Island Current already has it, with a long history of annual inspections behind her.

Construction and Design

Her hull is solid fiberglass, 36.7 ft registered and 42 ft overall with the bowsprit, on a broad 12.7 ft beam. That beam gives her a stable, roomy platform for a full rail of fishermen. A shallow 3 ft draft lets her work skinny water, inlets and back bays that deeper boats have to skip. Stainless steel rails and stanchions run around the cockpit, so passengers have something solid to lean on and hold.

Power and Systems

Power comes from a single John Deere 6068FM50 marine diesel rated at 230 hp. It's a dependable, widely supported workhorse that's simple to maintain and easy to find parts for. Two 175-gallon tanks hold 350 gallons of fuel, giving her the range for full-day trips without worrying about the next fuel stop. The fuel tanks are recent replacements. Fills and vents sit on both sides of the cockpit. Hydraulic steering keeps her light and responsive at the helm, and a 2-year-old 3.5 kW Phasor generator supplies AC power (it is currently out at a shop for routine servicing). Both the AC and DC panels are mounted in the cabin, where they're easy to reach.

Layout

The deck is laid out for fishing. A wide-open cockpit runs all the way aft to the transom, so there's room to fish shoulder to shoulder with bench seating along the way. Four steps lead up to a covered main cabin, where guests can get out of the weather and the captain runs the boat. Forward and below are storage space and a private enclosed head to starboard, a must-have for any passenger charter.

Electronics

At the helm, a Simrad NSS evo GPS/chartplotter works alongside a Furuno 1715 radar and a Furuno FCV-628 color video sounder for finding fish. Two VHF radios, a Standard Horizon Spectrum and an Icom M324G, plus a loud hailer handle communication on the water and with the rail.

Safety

Island Current carries the safety gear a passenger vessel needs. That includes a 12-person life float, an ACR 406 MHz EPIRB, Type I life preservers, a life ring, dry-chemical fire extinguishers, two Rule 2000 bilge pumps, and high-water alarms in the engine room and lazarette.
