Opening Description
Introduced in 1994 and designed by Rod Johnstone, the J/130 is J/Boats' performance cruiser for sailors who wanted real speed and seakeeping without a full racing crew. Built by TPI (Tillotson Pearson) in Warren, Rhode Island, she belongs to the celebrated generation of J/Boats "sprit boats" - fast, light-displacement designs carrying a retractable bowsprit for easily handled asymmetric spinnakers.
A deep external lead bulb keel, balanced spade rudder and a tall fractional rig give the J/130 her trademark blend of effortless reaching speed, easy motion at sea, and the shorthanded manageability that puts 200-mile days within reach of a couple. NOOTKA is a offshore-capable example, outfitted over the years with an extensive inventory of cruising and racing gear.
Belowdecks, her light but warmly finished interior - teak-and-holly sole, varnished trim and plenty of light - offers two cabins and a head, sleeping up to seven, with a forward V-berth, settees and a pilot berth in the saloon, and a double quarter cabin aft.
Her systems include a Spectra water maker, Seafrost refrigeration, Max Prop feathering propeller, Raymarine, Garmin and B&G electronics, Hydrovane self steering, large solar array and a full quiver of sails. NOOTKA is equally at home on a Pacific Northwest cruise or a Transpac start line. A recent (2025) survey is available for review.
Interior Accommodations
NOOTKA's interior reflects her performance-cruiser brief: light, well-built, and warmly finished, with bright teak-and-holly overlay on the sole, varnished wood trim, laminate countertops with wood sea rails, and an upholstered, ventilated cabin lit by opening ports and hatches.
The two-cabin layout sleeps up to six (three single and two double berths) and is served by a single head. Numerous opening ports and hatches provide excellent light and ventilation throughout.
Forward, the V-berth cabin offers a comfortable double with a hanging locker to port and access aft to the head.
To starboard, forward, the head compartment is fitted with a marine head, vanity with sink, and a separate shower, with the keel-stepped mast passing through on the compartment's inboard side. Pressure hot and cold water serves the vanity and shower.
Amidships, the main saloon is arranged with settees to port and starboard around a drop-leaf table, plus a fold out pilot berth to starboard, making a functional and sociable space underway and at anchor.
The galley is to starboard at the aft end of the saloon, set up for use at sea, with a Force 10 gimballed three-burner propane stove and oven, a Seafrost cold-plate refrigerator/freezer (12V and engine-driven compressors), a double stainless sink with pressure and foot-pump fresh water plus a saltwater foot pump.
Opposite, to port, the navigation station carries the boat's electronics and electrical distribution, with the main panel and instrument displays close to hand.Aft, the double quarter-berth cabin (to port) provides a comfortable sea berth and guest cabin.

Deck and Hull
The J/130's hull and deck are molded fiberglass with balsa coring, joined at the sheer flange with adhesive sealant and secondary interior FRP tabbing.
The underbody is classic Rod Johnstone performance form: a raked stem, low-wetted-surface canoe body, an external fin keel with a deep lead bulb (6,750 lb. ballast, 8' 6" draft), a balanced composite spade rudder, and a reverse- counter transom with an integral swim platform.
Her deck features wide side decks with painted non-skid on all horizontal surfaces, a sliding companionway hatch with turtle and drop board, two escape hatches and two vent hatches, stainless handrails, and a stainless bow frame carrying a canvas-and-clear-acrylic dodger.
Stainless steel pulpit, pushpit, and double lifelines on stainless stanchions surround the deck, and a welded aluminum arch aft carries the solar panels. The retractable reaching sprit deploys from a tube in the forepeak, and a stainless anchor chain roller is fitted at the stem
